In October 2010, Steven Lisberger, the creator of the Tron: Legacy franchise, started working on a follow-up. Plans for a remake with Leto portraying a new character changed in March 2017. When Wigutow began writing the script in August 2020, Garth Davis was scheduled to serve as director; however, he resigned in January 2023. A month later, Rønning took his place. Originally scheduled to start in August 2023, the 2023 Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes caused a delay in production. In the end, filming completed up in May 2024 after starting in Vancouver in January. The score was being written by Nine Inch Nails, an industrial rock band, by August.
On October 10, 2025, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures plans to release Tron: Ares in the United States. [1]

1 Development
Initial Tron: Legacy sequel development
In October 2010, franchise creator Steven Lisberger stated that a sequel to Tron: Legacy was being developed, with Legacy screenwriters Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz returning. [3] [4] Director Joseph Kosinski said in April 2011 that the script was still in production and that it will follow Olivia Wilde's Quorra and Garrett Hedlund’s Sam Flynn in the real world. [5] Kosinski stated on March 31 that the working title of the movie is TR3N and that the script should be completed in two weeks. [6] It was announced in June that Kitsis and Horowitz had left to work on their television series Once Upon a Time, and that screenwriter David DiGilio had been brought in to write the screenplay. [7] Bruce Boxleitnersaid in March 2012 that he thought production would start as early as 2014, after Kosinski was free after his Oblivion commitments. [8] Although Jesse Wigutow had been engaged to rework the script by December, Kitsis and Horowitz claimed in June that they were still working on the project [9]. [10] Boxleitner and Hedlund were confirmed to be returning for the sequel that same month. [11]
Disney formally approved the third movie in March 2015, with Hedlund, Kosinski, and Wilde returning and production scheduled to start in Vancouver in October. [12] [13] [14] [15]However, it was revealed in May that Disney had canceled the movie [16], and Wilde would confirm this the following month. [17] It was said that Tomorrowland's box office disaster was the cause of the cancellation. [18] While Hedlund would later claim in September that he was informed the sequel was not "totally dead" and would be interested in returning should a new picture be revealed, Boxleitner declared in July that the project's cancellation had terminated his desire in returning to the franchise [19]. [20]
Brigham Taylor, a Disney development official at the time, disclosed in August 2016 that talks were underway regarding Tron's future. [21] During a Q&A session with Kosinski in February 2017, he would say that the sequel was more under a "cryogenic freeze" than it was outright cancelled. He would say that Tron was placed on hold because of Disney's then-recent acquisition of Marvel and Lucasfilm. [22]
2 Reboot
Despite Kosinski's comments the previous month, it was announced in March 2017 that the franchise would be switching from a Legacy sequel to a reboot, with Jared Leto set to play a new character called "Ares," who had been kept from previous revisions of the sequel script. [23] Wigutow continued to develop the screenplay while Garth Davis was engaged in August 2020 to helm the movie. [24] The production designer for the movie at the time was Patrice Vermette. [25]
While promoting Morbius in March 2022, Leto affirmed that the movie was still in development. [26] By January 2023, Joachim Rønning had begun negotiations to take over as director after Davis had resigned. [27] Vermette, the production designer, would also go. [25] It was disclosed that Jack Thorne had written a draft of the script, and in June, Jodie Turner-Smith, Greta Lee, and Evan Peters joined the cast. [28] [29] [30] The next month, Cameron Monaghan and Sarah Desjardins would be joined. [31] [32] Gillian Anderson joins the cast in January 2024 in an unspecified capacity. [33]
3 Filming
The 2023 Writers Guild of America and 2023 SAG-AFTRA strikes caused the August 14, 2023, start date of Principal photography in Vancouver [27] to be postponed indefinitely. [34] [35] Filming was apparently scheduled to start in early 2024 after the strikes ended in early November 2023. [36] However, it was declared in late November 2023 that the project's formal start date would be after the year's holidays. [37] Rønning announced in January 2024 that production had started, [38] under the working title Velcro. [39] The cinematographer is Jeff Cronenweth. [40] Hasan Minhaj and Arturo Castro were added to the cast, and Disney released a first look photo in February. [41] Overnight on March 15, construction took place on the Cambie Bridge. [42] Jeff Bridges, who played Clu and Kevin Flynn in the earlier Tron movies, announced his participation in the movie in April. [43] On May 1, the filming was completed. [44]
4 Post-production
Editor Tyler Nelson is involved. [45]
4 Music
The movie's soundtrack will be provided by Nine Inch Nails , replacing Daft Punk. This is the first time Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have written a film score under their band's name. The announcement was made in August 2024. [46] [47] Together, the two created twenty soundtracks before Tron: Ares, each of which was given its unique moniker. [47] [48]
Reznor clarified that adopting the Nine Inch Nails moniker changed their scoring strategy, putting them in a "grittier" frame of mind and enabling them to "play by different rules"—a move that Disney was happy with. [49]
5 Release
On October 10, 2025, Tron: Ares will be launched in theaters, including IMAX theaters. [1][50]
