In 2021, Marvel Studios started hinting at the possibility of creating a Thunderbolts team within the MCU. When Schreier and Pearson were attached in June 2022, it was announced that the movie was in development. Additional casting will go place until early 2023, with the main cast being announced in September. By March 2023, Lee Sung Jin, one of numerous creatives who had previously worked with Schreier on the Netflix series Beef (2023–present), had joined to revise the script. The 2023 labor problems in Hollywood caused production to be delayed, which resulted in some cast changes in early 2024. By then, Calo had joined for additional rewrites. From February to June 2024, the movie was filmed on location in Utah and Kuala Lumpur, as well as at Trilith Studios and Atlanta Metro Studios in Atlanta, Georgia.
Thunderbolts*, the last movie in Phase Five of the MCU, will be released in the US on May 2, 2025.
1 Premise
Valentina Allegra de Fontaine traps a gang of antiheroes in a lethal trap and forces them to go on a perilous quest that, if they work together, could lead to their redemption. [1]
2 Cast
Yelena Belova, played by Florence Pugh, was a Thunderbolts member who received Black Widow assassination training in the Red Room. [2] According to Pugh, recent terrible events in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) have impacted the character, including as the passing of her adoptive sister Natasha Romanoff, who played Black Widow in the 2019 movie Avengers: Endgame. [3]
Sebastian Stan plays Bucky Barnes, the de facto commander of the Thunderbolts and an augmented super soldier with a prosthetic arm. [2] [4] Thought to have been killed in combat during World War II, he resurfaced as a brainwashed assassin before his programming was taken out, and he has since been elected to the U S Congress. [5] Stan likened Barnes to Jack Nicholson's character Randle McMurphy in the 1975 movie One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, stating that both were entering a disorderly and dysfunctional group whose members must be brought together. [6]
Wyatt Russell plays John Walker / U.S. Agent, a Thunderbolts member and augmented super soldier. Prior to his less than honorable discharge in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021), he was selected by the U.S. government to succeed Steve Rogers’s as Captain America. He was a former decorated Captain of the U.S. Army Rangers. [2]
Olga Kurylenko plays Antonia Dreykov / Taskmaster, a Thunderbolts member who can imitate opponents' fighting techniques thanks to her photographic reflexes. Before Romanoff released her in the movie Black Widow (2021), she was previously under the supervision of her father, Dreykov, to carry out Red Room assignments. [2]
Bob / Sentry, played by Lewis Pullman, is a superpowered person who has amnesia [7]. Geraldine Viswanathan as Mel: The helper of Valentina Allegra de Fontaine [8] [9]
David Harbour plays Red Guardian, also known as Alexei Shostakov, a Thunderbolts member who serves as Belova's father figure and the Russian equivalent of Captain America's super soldier. [2] According to Harbour, the movie delves deeper into the nuanced relationship between Belova and Shostakov that was first presented in Black Widow. Belova can't tolerate Shostakov, he said, but she needs someone to make her feel whole, and Shostakov can do that. [10]
Ava Starr / Ghost, played by Hannah John-Kamen, is a Thunderbolts member with the ability to phase through objects. [2] According to John-Kamen, the movie presents a different side of the character after her debut in Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018), where Ghost is able to control her abilities with composure and decisiveness and is no longer in a state of molecular disequilibrium. [11]
Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, is a contessa and the director of the Central Intelligence Agency(CIA), who unites the Thunderbolts [2] [12]. [1] In Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), de Fontaine is seen as the person who purchased Avengers Tower, now known as "Watchtower," from Tony Stark. [13] De Fontaine is "after power, control, and just generally she wants to kick ass in the Marvel Universe," according to Louis-Dreyfus. [14]
Wendell Edward Pierce plays a political figure, while Chris Bauer has been cast in an unspecified role [15]. [16] It is anticipated that Laurence Fishburne and Rachel Weisz will return to their respective roles as Melina Vostokoff and Bill Foster in the MCU. [17] Harrison Ford's return to the role of Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross from Captain America: Brave New World (2025) has been the subject of mixed reports. [18] [19]
3 Production
1 Development
James Gunn, the director of the 2014 Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie Guardians of the Galaxy, indicated interest in a movie based on the Thunderbolts, a group of "anti-heroes and super-criminals" from Marvel Comics. [21] Based on Guardians of the Galaxy's success, Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, stated that this was a possibility. [20] After filming the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) movie The Suicide Squad (2021), Gunn had lost interest in the Thunderbolts concept by May 2021 because the DC Comics team was built on a similar notion. [22] Given that the comics version of Ghost is a member of the Thunderbolts team, Hannah John-Kamen stated in June 2018 that she would be excited to reprise her role as Ava Starr / Ghost from the MCU movie Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018) in a possible Thunderbolts movie. [21]
After it was revealed in mid-2019 that Daniel BrĂŒhl would reprise his role as Helmut Zemofrom the MCU film Captain America: Civil War (2016) in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021), there were rumors that a Thunderbolts team might be added to the MCU. [23] [24] Julia Louis-Dreyfus made her debut in that series as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, who is shown recruiting Wyatt Russell's character, John Walker / U.S. Agent. In the post-credits sequence of the MCU movie Black Widow (2021), De Fontaine is also seen collaborating with Florence Pugh's character Yelena Belova. Commentators conjectured that she is assembling a group of antiheroes or villains, such as the Thunderbolts [25], and some thought that group might make an appearance in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. The Thunderbolts were never considered for the production, according to executive producer Nate Moore, since they would "cloud the story" and detract from other elements of the series. Malcolm Spellman, the Head writer, stated that "I don't know if fans are crazy or not" in reference to the "a lot of chatter" about the team's possible entry to the MCU. [26]
By June 2022, Feige was producing Thunderbolts, which Jake Schreier was directing [27][28] from a story by Eric Pearson. Following a presentation that "blew away" executives at Marvel Studios, Schreier was hired. Actors had been contacted by the studio at that point to inquire about their availability to reprise their parts in the movie. [27] According to commentators, the crew might be led by de Fontaine or Zemo and include characters like Bucky Barnes, Clint Barton, Taskmaster, Abomination, Belova, U.S. Agent, Ghost, or Zemo. [27] [24] [25] [29] [30] The deadline Given that Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross has close ties to the team in the comics, Hollywood also proposed that he be recast for the movie when original actor William Hurt passed away in March 2022 [27] [30]. [27] With a July 26, 2024, release date, the movie was formally revealed in July at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC). It was supposed to be the final movie in the MCU's Phase Five. [31] Scarlett Johansson is listed as an executive producer. She played Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow in the MCU from 2010 until 2021. [32]
2 Pre-production
Concept art of the main characters dressed in costume was unveiled at the D23 Expo in September 2022: (L to R) David Harbour as Red Guardian, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, and Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster
Because Belova was supposed to be the leader of the antihero squad and Pugh, Russell, and BrĂŒhl were said to be returning, Justin Kroll of Deadline Hollywood called the movie a spin-off for Belova in early September 2022. [33] In addition to Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov / Red Guardian, and Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov / Taskmaster, Pugh, Russell, John-Kamen, and Louis-Dreyfus were announced to star at the D23 Expo that same month. All of these actors were reprising their roles from earlier MCU films. [2] Schreier likened the character relationships to those in the movies Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011), Ronin (1998), and Reservoir Dogs (1992), all of which deal with a "mis-matched team forced to work together." He also cited Toy Story 3 (2010) as a less plausible source of inspiration, claiming that the Thunderbolts squad faces the same obsolescence as the Toy Story characters in that movie. [34] Harbour's description of the primary cast as "a bunch of misfits and outcasts and losers and people who don't really live up to the super in superhero" suggested that the movie will be different from other MCU films. [35] Pugh claimed that the fact that these characters "don't play well together" was what made them happy to be together. [14] For Thunderbolts and another MCU movie, she was supposed to receive eight figures. [36]
Journalist Jeff Sneider revealed at the end of September 2022 that Harrison Ford was the front-runner to take Hurt's place as Ross. Marvel had intended to reveal his casting at D23, but Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy asked them not to, arguing that it would interfere with their efforts to promote Ford's Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023). [37] [38] Sneider revealed in mid-October that Ford had been chosen to play Ross and will make his MCU debut in Captain America: Brave New World (2025). [39] Variety stated that Ford's participation would be restricted to Brave New World, despite The Hollywood Reporter confirming his casting in both Thunderbolts and Brave New World [18]. [19] Later remarks from Feige were seen as confirmation by writers for Esquire and Entertainment Weekly that Ford will not be in Thunderbolts. [40] [41]
When Louis-Dreyfus announced that production will start in June 2023, Ayo Edebiri joined the cast in January of that year [42]. [43] Steven Yeun was cast in a major part in February, which may continue in other MCU movies. [44] On the Netflix series Beef (2023–present), Yeun collaborated with Schreier, and the director added the role with the actor in mind. [45]Beef author Lee Sung Jin stated there were "a lot of themes and exciting things" that drew him to the project and that he was rewriting the script at Schreier's request the following month. Working closely with Schreier on the script, he pointed out that, in contrast to Beef, Thunderbolts was Schreier's creation and, because of its vast scope and scale, required different writing than the series. [46] According to Sneider, Marvel Studios wanted the other characters to play a more equal role so that the movie would seem like an ensemble piece, and Pearson's script concentrated too much on the characters returning from Black Widow, which he also penned. [47] After working on Beef, Grace Yun was hired as production designer by April [48] [49], and Sanja Milkovic Hays, who had previously worked on the MCU movies Captain Marvel (2019) and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), was hired as costume designer. [50] By the end of May, cinematographer Steve Yedlin was in Atlanta, Georgia, working on the movie. However, he eventually quit the project, and Andrew Droz Palermotook his place [51]. [52] [49][better source needed] who contributed to the Moon Knight(2022) television series from Marvel Studios. [53]
Filming was supposed to continue once the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike ended, but it was postponed until the beginning of May. [54] The Utah Film Commission revealed in June that Thunderbolts would spend more than $4.5 million in Utah to film in Emery Countyand Grand County, Utah, and that the release date had been rescheduled to December 20, 2024 [55]. Executive producer Brian Chapek stated that the Utah sites were used because they felt "untouched by the larger world" and that the "grounded, globe-trotting film" would feature a number of realistic filming locations. [56] The release date was postponed once further, to July 25, 2025, following the conclusion of the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike in November. [57] Robert Kirkman, Yeun's buddy and comic book writer, announced shortly after that Yeun had been chosen to play Sentry. [58] Russell stated that he would start filming in March or April 2024 and was confident that the movie will be entertaining, engaging, and not a "straightforward" Marvel movie [59]. [60] Stan promised to start filming "in a month or so" in January. [61] Yeun left at that time because of a scheduling conflict brought on by the production's delay [62]. [63] [64] but indicated a desire to collaborate on a future MCU movie. [63] It was uncertain whether Marvel would reconsider or recast Yeun's character, [65], but by the end of the month, it was announced that Lewis Pullman was the studio's first pick to play Sentry in place of Yeun, [66] [67], and his casting was quickly confirmed. [68] Geraldine Viswanathan was cast in the humorous supporting character of de Fontaine's assistant Mel, taking Edebiri's place after she left owing to the delays, while Laurence Fishburne and Rachel Weisz were rumored to be returning to their MCU roles as Bill Foster and Melina Vostokoff [[9], [17]]. [8] [9] [68] The release date was pushed ahead to May 2, 2025, in February, to coincide with the The Fantastic Four: First Steps movie from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. [69] Later that month, Joanna Calo began reworking the script. Earlier iterations focused on the titular crew embarking on a quest that might result in their demise. [70]
3 Filming
The initial plan was for the six-month filming to start in mid-June 2023. [54] [43] [71] Marvel Studios apparently intended to shoot what they could during principal photography and make any required writing revisions during already scheduled reshoots, thus it was initially not anticipated that the writers' strike would have an impact. [72] The writers' strike and the ensuing SAG-AFTRA strike finally caused a delay in the start of the filming. [54] [57] Stan's work on The Apprentice (2024), in which he put on weight to play Donald Trump, coincided with the first shooting schedule. When the strikes started, he had already started the physical change required to play Barnes, and he had to go back. [73] Harbour intended to film the movie in Atlanta at the same time as he filmed his Jim Hopper scenes for the fifth season of Stranger Things (2025); [74] the strikes also caused a delay in the production. [75]
At Trilith Studios and Atlanta Metro Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, Principal photography started on February 26, 2024, [76] under the working title Oops All Berries, a reference to a cereal version of Cap'n Crunch that only contains berry-flavored chunks [77] [78]. [56] [78] The cinematographer was Andrew Droz Palermo. [49] The movie was filmed for the IMAX. [79] It was changed to Thunderbolts* by March. [80] [81] From May 29 to June 12, 2024, filming was place in Grand County and Emery County, Utah. [82] By early June, Louis-Dreyfus had finished her sequences. [83] [84] and stated that Marvel Studios was making an effort to "go back to their roots" by emphasizing the humanity of the characters, realistic stunt scenes, and minimizing visual effects wherever feasible. [85] Additionally, the Medan Pasar Square and the Merdeka 118 skyscraper in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, were used for filming [86] [87]. The shoot ended the week of June 19. [88]
4 Post-production
Wendell Edward Pierce, who plays a political figure, and Chris Bauer were announced as the film's cast members in September 2024 [15]. [16] More photos were taken in Atlanta in early December. [89]
The film is being edited by Harry Yoon and Angela Catanzaro, who previously collaborated with Schreier on Beef and on the MCU movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings(2021). [48] [90] Industrial Light & Magic, Framestore, Digital Domain, Rising Sun Pictures, Raynault VFX, Base FX, Crafty Apes, and Mammal Studios all contributed visual effects, which are overseen by Jake Morrison. [91]
4 Music
After composing the music for Schreier's 2015 film Paper Towns, Son Lux started work on Thunderbolts* in the first week of February 2025 at Abbey Road Studios in London. [92]
5 Marketing
Pugh debuted her new Black Widow suit and an updated emblem for the movie with Schreier in a set video published by Marvel Studios after filming started in March 2024. "Thunderbolts*" is how the new logo styled the title. [93] [94] While Sabina Graves of Gizmodo thought the film was entertaining and a good tease for a moment involving Belova, Kristen Lopez of TheWrap said viewers would "start deconstructing the brief images she's shown immediately" [93]. She drew attention to Pugh's short hair and her joke that they "really shouldn't be showing any of this" with Schreier. [94] Chris McPherson of Collider also talked about Pugh's outfit, describing it as "very military [and] quite tactical" and pointing out her teal eyeliner. [95] A number of commenters asked why the redesigned logo included an asterisk. [80] The next month, Feige affirmed that Thunderbolts* was the official title and promised to clarify the asterisk's usage after the movie's premiere [81], which sparked more conjecture about what it meant. [96] [97] One notion was that the team would be referred to as the Dark Avengers or New Avengers, variations of the Avengers name, rather than the Thunderbolts in the movie. [98] [99] There is another Thunderbolts squad in the MCU with characters that are more similar to the comic book rosters, according to another idea. [98]
In June 2024, a behind-the-scenes peek was shown at CineEurope [88], and the following month, Schreier and the cast showed the first clips from the movie at SDCC. For the panel, Harbour wore a Red Guardian costume. [100] [101] After the SDCC footage was leaked online, Marvel's video commemorating the company's 85th anniversary in August included an official look at the Thunderbolts squad. [102] A month later, the Pixies' song “Where Is My Mind?” appeared in a teaser trailer for the movie [32]. [103] Tom Power of TechRadarbelieves the movie is "looking very good" and described the teaser as a longer and better quality version of the previously released footage. He emphasized the action and tone of the teaser, as well as the characters' identity issues. [104] Mary Kate Carr wrote for The A.V. Club on the movie's many mysteries, such as the asterisk in the title, and how the teaser "valiantly" refused to reveal any story points or secrets. [105] In February 2025, during Super Bowl LIX, a second trailer was shown. [1] According to commenters, the teaser seemed to support rumors that the titular squad would be battling Bob/Sentry's evil alter ego, the Void. [106] [107] Red Guardian says in the teaser that they believe the team's accomplishments would land them on the cover of Wheaties, a cereal that goes by the slogan "The Breakfast of Champions" and features athletes on its packaging. Marvel Studios unveiled a poster for the movie that resembled a Wheaties box with the team on it, in addition to the trailer. "The Breakfast of Champions Thunderbolts*" was the caption for their social media posts featuring the poster. [108] [109] The phrase "The Avengers Are Not Available" was added in a footnote for the title asterisk on a worldwide poster with an asterisk motif. [110] Kieran Fisher of /Film wondered if this was a prank or if the asterisk in the movie's title actually meant this. [110] Instead of the asterisk being a "actual serious mystery," Scott Collura from IGN and James Whitbrook from Gizmodo said the footnote complemented the movie's marketing strategy of portraying the team as a motley crew of comical heroes [98]. [99] [98]
A trailer for the movie, which is edited similarly to those for independent films A24 films, was released by Letterboxd in March 2025. Techno music, a "A24-esque makeover" of the Marvel Studios logo, and title cards showcasing previous A24 projects that the actors and staff of the movie worked on are all included. The trailer, which Schreier helped create, was released at about the same time. "Indie, A24-feeling assassin movie with Marvel superheroes" is how Pugh characterized the picture. [49] Marvel had "film buffs in mind" when publishing the teaser via Letterboxd, according to Zosha Millman of Polygon. She believed that Thunderbolts* would still be "largely what you expect" of a Marvel movie, even with the artistic credentials that the teaser emphasized. [111] A24 posted a meme from its 2019–present HBO drama series Euphoria on social media in response to the teaser, which it was unaware of prior to its publication. [49] Later in March, Marvel Studios revealed that a number of MCU characters, including Stan, Russell, Pugh, Pullman, Harbour, and John-Kamen, would be returning for the crossover movie Avengers: Doomsday (2026). [112]Commentators debated whether this news was a spoiler because it appeared to disclose characters who survive the events of the movie and supported theories that Taskmaster would pass away early on. [113] [114] The statement was criticized by Michael Walsh of Nerdist, who said it had weakened the sense that any of the main cast members could die, which was one of the main reasons some people were drawn to Thunderbolts*. He claimed that Marvel ought to have kept the Thunderbolts* cast members out of the Doomsday announcement, likening it to giving away who survives the events of The Dirty Dozen (1967). [115] IGN's Amelia Emberwing stated that "knowing who makes it out alive [does not matter] much in a comic book franchise" and that the return actors might be portraying their characters from other multiverse realms, hence the announcement was not necessarily a spoiler. [116]
6 Release
On May 2, 2025, [69] [117] Thunderbolts* will be released in the United States in IMAX, [118]ScreenX, and 4DX. [119] Previously, July 26, 2024, [31], December 20, 2024, [55], and July 25, 2025 were the dates. [57] It will be the last movie in the MCU's Phase Five. [100]
