Following the success of the original movie, Cameron announced the first two sequels in 2010, with the then-untitled Avatar 3 aiming for a 2015 release. In 2006, Cameron had mentioned that he would like to develop sequels to Avatar (2009) if it was successful. [4] [5] However, in order to give the crew more time to work on the writing, pre-production, and visual effects, there were major delays due to the addition of two more sequels (for a total of four) and the creation of new technology needed to film performance capture scenes underwater, a feat never previously achieved. [6] On September 25, 2017, Avatar: Fire and Ash began filming in New Zealand concurrently with Avatar: The Way of Water. After more than three years of production, the filming was finished in late December 2020. The movie is supposed to be released on December 19, 2025, although there have been nine delays in its theatrical release, the most recent of which happened on August 9, 2024 [7] [1]. [3] [8] [1] Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, two further sequels, are currently in different stages of production and are anticipated to be released in 2029 and 2031, respectively.
1 Cast

He eventually joined the Na'vi in their fight against humans and permanently changed his mind into his avatar. [12] In the first movie, Giovanni Ribisi played Parker Selfridge, the embarrassed former head administrator of the RDA mining company. [23] [24] Quarritch's replacement as commander of the RDA's military activities, General Frances Ardmore, played by Edie Falco. [29] [30] [31] [33]Jack Champion plays Quaritch's adolescent son Miles "Spider" Socorro, who was born inHell's Gate (the human base on Pandora in the first movie) and was saved and taken in by Jake and Neytiri after they had already murdered his father. [29] [30] [31] [34]
Bailey Bass as Tsireya ("Reya"), the daughter of Ronal and Tonowari and a graceful and powerful free diver from the Metkayina. Tsireya becomes Lo'ak's romantic interest in the second movie. [29] [30] [31] Rotxo, a young male Metkayina hunter and free diver, is portrayed by Duane Evans, Jr. Dr. Max Patel, played by Dileep Rao, was a scientist who supported Jake's revolt against the RDA while working in the Avatar Program. [36]
Corporal Lyle Wainfleet, played by Matt Gerald, was a mercenary who fought and lost his life in the RDA's 2154 conflict with the Na'vi. His memories were included into a recombinant years later by the RDA. [37]

[38], [39], [40], [41], [42] [43] Varang, the Na'vi leader of a clan of "Ash People" who live in volcanoes, will be portrayed by Oona Chaplin. [44] [45] [46][47]"Varang is the leader of a people who have endured an incredible hardship," Cameron remarked of Varang. That has hardened her. She will go to any lengths for them, even if it means doing something that we would view as horrible. [48] The Tulkun who befriends Lo'ak, Payakan, will also make a comeback in the movie. [27]
2 Production
1 Development
James Cameron said in 2006 that he planned to develop two sequels to Avatar if the movie was a hit. [4] He claimed in 2010 that the movie's enormous popularity proved he would. [5] December 2014 and 2015 were the initial release dates for the sequels. [6] He saved some of the original movie's sequences for further story developments. [4] [49] Cameron intended to start work on the sequels "once the novel is nailed down" and shoot them consecutively. [50] In December 2009, it was confirmed that Jake and Neytiri's story would continue in the sequels. [51] Cameron hinted that the humans would reappear as the story's adversaries. [52] Cameron declared in 2011 that he wanted to impart a more realistic feel to the sequels by shooting them at a frame rate faster than the industry standard of 24 frames per second. [53]
Cameron declared in 2013 that the follow-ups would be shot in New Zealand , with performance capture scheduled for 2014. At least one world premiere had to take place in Wellington, and at least NZ$ 500 million (about US$410 million at December 2013 exchange rates) had to be spent on production activities in New Zealand, including live-action filming and visual effects, according to an agreement with the New Zealand government. The government of New Zealand declared that it will increase the basic tax refund for filmmaking from 15% to 20%. In certain situations, overseas films would be eligible for a 25% reimbursement, while New Zealand productions (as defined by section 18 of the New Zealand Film Commission Act 1978) would receive a 40% rebate. [54] [55]
In February 2016, it was announced that the sequels would start production in New Zealand in April 2016. [56] For the four sequels, Cameron brought on art director Aashrita Kamath and Cinematographer Russell Carpenter, who collaborated with Cameron on True Lies and Titanic. [57] [58] [59] For the underwater scenes, Kirk Krack, the creator of Performance Freediving International, served as a free-diving instructor for the actors and crew. [60] Weta Digital, a visual effects studio based in New Zealand, revealed on July 31, 2017, that it had started working on the Avatar sequels. [61]
Though the final writing credits were not made clear, it was later revealed that Cameron, Jaffa, Silver, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno participated in the writing of all of the sequels before being given separate scripts to complete. Originally, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver were listed as Cameron's co-writers. [62] [63] [64], [65], [66] Cameron claims that this movie was separated from Avatar: The Way of Water because the initial idea for that movie included too much content. [67] "In a nutshell, we had too many great ideas packed into act one of movie two," Cameron said. The movie was rushing forward, and we weren't focusing on character development enough. "Guys, we need to divide it," I remarked. [67]
After learning of the future intentions, BBC News revealed in November 2018 that Avatar: The Seed Bearer was a possible title for the movie. [68] Cameron stated to Entertainment Tonightthree months later that it is being considered and that no decision has been made as of yet. [69] At the D23 fan gathering on August 9, 2024, Cameron officially unveiled the film's title as Avatar: Fire and Ash. [70] Cameron commented of the title "If you think of fire as wrath, fury, violence, and the like, then ash is the aftermath. However, I don't think I could talk too much about it until you actually see the movie and understand what it means. What is the aftermath, then? Loss, grief, right? What consequences does that have down the road? More rage, more hatred, more violence. A vicious circle exists. That's the way of thinking, then. [71]
2 Writing
Cameron included "Ash People"—fiery Na'vi—in order to examine "different cultures" from the first two Avatar movies. Because Cameron had previously taken the Na'vi "good sides" and humans on one, he decided to add "another angle" by making them adversaries. [72] According to Landau:
"On the Na'avi [sic] side, there are good and terrible individuals, but most of the time, people don't think of themselves as awful. What causes them to change into what we consider to be negative? Perhaps there are additional elements involved that we are unaware of. [46]
"One thing we wanted to do in this film is not be black-and-white simplistic," Cameron stated. Or simple and blue-and-pink. We're working to go past the idea that "all Na'vi are good, all humans are bad." [48]
Cameron described the Wind Traders as "nomadic traders, equivalent to the camel caravans of the Spice Road back in the Middle Ages." The Wind Traders are also introduced in the movie. They're also just enjoyable, you know. They coexist harmoniously with their creatures, just like all other Na'vi. [73]
Additionally, Cameron stated:
More character depth will be the main [creative] advancement in ['Fire and Ash'], Cameron stated. "The entire concept of this film cycle is to live with these people and embark on this epic adventure with them, but we're also seeing new civilizations and creatures—all the same things you'd anticipate from a 'Avatar' movie. Therefore, I believe it's more about getting to know the characters' hearts and souls than it is about showing you the best water [VFX] ever done. Additionally, some really intriguing new characters appear. This is a long-term journey. It will unfold during the third, fourth, and fifth films. The entire thing has an epic cycle. [74]
After reading the Fire and Ash script, Champion stated:
"It really startled me. It simply makes a sharp left turn, which is advantageous. A wrecking ball appears just when you think you know where it's headed. 'Oh wow, I never thought that would've happened,' as you say. Additionally, you are exposed to new civilizations and see more of Pandora. Thus, in my opinion, it surpasses Avatar 2. Together, they will all improve. [75]
3 Casting
In January 2010, it was confirmed that Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña had agreed to return for the sequels. [49] Cameron added that Sigourney Weaver would appear in all three of the sequels (the fourth was not yet planned) and that her character Grace Augustine would still be alive. However, it was eventually announced that Weaver would be playing Kiri, the adoptive daughter of Jake and Neytiri. [11] [76] In an August 2017 interview with Empire, Cameron disclosed that Stephen Lang would serve as the primary antagonist in all four films in addition to making a comeback. [77]
Matt Gerald formally committed to playing Corporal Lyle Wainfleet in all future sequels to his first movie in August 2017. [78] Kate Winslet signed a contract for an undefined part in all four sequels on October 3, 2017. [79] Cameron noted that her role was named Ronal and said, "Kate and I had been looking for something to do together for 20 years, since our collaboration on Titanic, which was one of the most rewarding of my career." [16] [17] [80]Dileep Rao’s comeback as Dr. Max Patel was confirmed on January 25, 2018. [36] Since she would only be shooting for a month, Winslet said her role was "relatively small comparative to the lengthy shoot," but she was still "a pivotal character in the ongoing story." [81]
As Varang, "a strong and vibrant central character who spans the entire saga of the sequels" beginning with Fire and Ash, Oona Chaplin joined the cast in June 2017. [44] [82] Eiza González tried out for Chaplin's part as well. [83] David Thewlis announced his participation in the franchise in April 2018, saying he will appear in three of the four follow-ups. He later clarified in January 2020 that his character was Na'vi. [38] [39] [41] As a result, Thewlis was frequently listed as a member of the cast of Avatar: The Way of Water. However, in June 2020, he declared that the rumors were false and that he would truly stay in Avatar: Fire and Ash until the fifth. [43]
4 Filming
On September 25, 2017, Principal photography for Ash and Avatar: The Way of Fire and Water started concurrently in Manhattan Beach, California, California. [84] Cameron declared that filming with the main performance capture cast was finished on November 14, 2018. [85] After the first two sequels' post-production is finished, the majority of the next two sequels' filming will start. [86] [87] Producer Jon Landau claims that in early 2019, live-action filming for Avatar: Fire and Ash and its predecessor began in New Zealand. [88] In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Landau declared on March 17, 2020, that the Avatar sequel movie production in New Zealand had been put on indefinite hold. Additionally, he affirmed that Los Angeles would continue to be the site of production. [89] But atWellington’s Weta Digital, visual effects production went on. [90]
Filming was able to resume in New Zealand in early May after the government approved health and safety production guidelines. [91] A special visa category for border exemptions for foreigners deemed necessary to a project of "significant economic value" allowed James Cameron and other members of the Avatar crew to enter New Zealand on May 31. [92] Landau shared a photo of himself and Cameron on Instagram on June 1, 2020, indicating that they had returned to New Zealand to continue filming. Before they could restart filming, the 55 crew members who had gone to New Zealand began a two-week government-supervised isolation period at a Wellington hotel. This would make Avatar: Fire and Ash and Avatar: The Way of Water the first big Hollywood blockbusters to start production again after the pandemic delayed it. [93] [needs non-primary source] [94] [95] [96] Cameron declared that 95% of Avatar: Fire and Ash was finished in September 2020. [97] [98] December 2020 marked the end of the filming. [99]
Cameron provided the following Avatar: Fire and Ash update in February 2024:
It is essentially over. In order to fill in the final two or three percent, we are filming pick-ups on [Fire and Ash]. In addition, we have live-action pick-ups scheduled for June, which will add another two to three percent. About a quarter of the fourth film is finished. After posting on [Fire and Ash], we're now working on the VFX, which is a huge task. Between now and then, I'll need every moment to finish it. Right today, the technology has advanced to the point where it is truly necessary. As we progress, we make minor adjustments, but we are there. The main idea is that we jumped back, which is why we worked on the two films together for four years and built to it for seven years. The minds and eyes of the computer artists are more important than the technology. It's artistry—a very, very creative process. To get the orchestra playing at its best right now, thousands of people are conducting it. [100]
The New Zealand Film Commission announced in early July 2022 that the Avatar sequels have been funded by the nation's Screen Production Grant, which has totaled more than NZ$140 million. In contrast, the film subsidies for The Hobbit trilogy were NZ$161 million. The Economic Development and Regional Development Minister Stuart Nash contended that New Zealand's film subsidies for major Hollywood productions brought significant foreign investment and jobs to the New Zealand film industry, despite ACT party deputy leader Brooke van Velden criticizing the government's film subsidy program for allegedly taking public funds away from other areas. [101]
3 Music
Landau revealed in August 2021 that Simon Franglen would write the music for the Avatar follow-ups. [102] [103]
4 Release
20th Century Studios plans to release Avatar: Fire and Ash on December 19, 2025. [8] [104]Similar to its predecessor, the film experienced numerous delays—in this case, nine total—because the crew spent extra time on the pre-production, screenplay, and visual effects stages. Prior to Cameron pushing the release dates to 2016, 2017, and 2018, it was originally set for December 2015 [9] . [105] The four Avatar sequels were released in April 2016, and a new release date of December 2020 was declared. [106] Avatar 4 and 5, the recurrent sequels, will be released on December 20, 2024, and December 19, 2025, respectively. The next year, a new release date of December 17, 2021, was confirmed. [3] However, the release dates of the sequels were delayed by two years after the announcement of three new Star Wars films in May 2019 [107]. Avatar: Fire and Ash is now set for release on December 22, 2023. [108] The COVID-19 pandemic caused the release date to be postponed once more, and a new release date of December 20, 2024, was announced in August 2020. [109] [110]On June 13, 2023, it was revealed that the movie will be delayed again, this time until December 19, 2025, because of the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike. [8] [104] Dolby Vision will be used for the release of Avatar: Fire and Ash and its upcoming sequels. [111]
James Cameron's initial cut of Avatar: Fire and Ash was reported to have a nine-hour running duration in December 2022, just after the release of Avatar: The Way of Water. [112] Later, Cameron explained that the nine hours of content referred to the three-hour films Avatar: Fire and Ash, Avatar 4, and Avatar 5, which together accounted for nine hours of content. [113][114] He subsequently stated that Avatar: Fire and Ash would have a greater duration than Avatar: The Way of Water, which lasted three hours and twelve minutes. [67]
The 'Ash people' are new Na'vi people who would be the adversaries of the movie, Cameron disclosed in a 20 minutes interview. [115]
5 Sequels
The second of four Avatar sequels is titled Avatar: Fire and Ash. Following the publication of Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third and fourth sequels, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, are scheduled to be released. In an interview on November 26, 2017, Cameron said, despite reports that the previous two sequels had been approved, "Let's face it, if Avatar 2 and 3 don't make enough money, there's not going to be a 4 and 5." [116]"They're making 2 and 3," David Thewlis subsequently revealed in February 2018, adding, "they're going to see if people go and see them, and then they'll make 4 and 5". [38] In contrast, Sigourney Weaver declared in November 2018 that she was "busy doing Avatar 4 and 5" after the first two sequels had finished primary shooting. This was seen by a number of media sites as an indication that the final two sequels had begun production. [117] [118] [119]
In January 2019, Disney CEO Bob Iger acknowledged that Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 were in development but had not yet received formal approval, in response to The Walt Disney Company proposed acquisition of 21st Century Fox. [120] In February 2019, producer Jon Landau suggested that Iger might have been misunderstood. A third of Avatar 4 has already been filmed, he added, adding Avatar 4 and 5 "are not only [greenlit]". [87]
At the D23 Expo in September 2022, Cameron declared that Avatar 4 production had officially started. [121] Cameron stated in January 2024 that he would wait to begin filming the rest of Avatar 4 until Fire and Ash was out. [122]
