Fantastic Four(2015) failed, 20th Century Fox started working on a new Fantastic Four movie. Marvel Studios gained control of the series after the studio was purchased by Disney in March 2019, and a new movie was revealed in July. Although he was supposed to take over as director in December 2020, Jon Watts resigned in April 2022. That September, when Kaplan and Springer were working on the script, Shakman took his place. By early 2023, casting had begun, and in March, Friedman joined Squires and Cameron in rewriting the script. Instead than retelling the characters' origin tale, Marvel Studios aimed to create a fresh narrative with them. By the time the primary cast was revealed in mid-February 2024, Pearson had joined to refine the script. From July to November 2024, the movie was filmed on location in England and Spain as well as at Pinewood Studios in London. On July 25, 2025, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, the first movie and the start of Phase Six of the MCU, will be released in the US.

1 Premise

The  Fantastic Four must defend their globe against the planet-eating cosmic creature Galactus and his herald, the Silver Surfer, on a retro-futuristic Earth reminiscent of the 1960s. [1]

2 Cast

Pedro Pascal plays Reed Richards , often known as Mister Fantastic, the leader of the Fantastic Four and a brilliant scientist who has the ability to extend any portion of his body to enormous lengths. [2] As Sue Storm / Invisible WomanVanessa Kirby plays Reed's wife, Johnny's sister, and one of the Fantastic Four with the ability to create force fields and make herself and other people invisible. [2] human Torch , played by Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm:

One of the Fantastic Four and Sue's brother, he has the ability to fly and submerge himself in fire. [2] [3] Quinn did not base his interpretation on Chris Evans's portrayal of the character, although he was a fan of Evans's performance in the 20th Century Fox movies Fantastic Four(2005) and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer(2007). [4]

As Ben Grimm / The Thing, played by Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Reed's closest friend, a former astronaut, and one of the Fantastic Four, he has superhuman strength and endurance due to his skin being changed into a covering of orange rock. Instead of utilizing prosthetic makeup, Moss-Bachrach uses motion capture and computer-generated imagery (CGI) to portray the Thing. [5] He talked about this procedure with Mark Ruffalo, who uses the same technology to play Bruce Banner / Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). [6] Shakman looked over desert pebbles and spoke with scientists to determine the greatest source for the Thing's appearance. [7]

Galactus, played by Ralph Ineson, is a massive cosmic creature that feeds on the life force of worlds. [8] [9] To help the crew visualize how he intended Galactus to be portrayed in the movie, producer Kevin Feige showed them a clip of the character from the 2017 online game Fortnite Battle Royale[10] Julia Garner as Shalla-Bal / Silver Surfer: Galactus's metallic-skinned herald who travels through space on a surfboard-like vessel. [11]  [1] Garner uses motion capture to play the Silver Surfer. [12]

Paul Walter Hauser [13] John ,Malkovich [14] Natasha ,Lyonne [15] Sarah Niles [1] The movie also features H.E.R.B.I.E., the Fantastic Four's robot buddy. [16] Mole Man [17] and Robert Downey Jr. as Victor von Doom / Doctor Doom in a post-credits sequence are both anticipated to make an appearance. [18]

3 Production

1 Background

Josh Trank co-wrote and directed the 2015 movie Fantastic Four, which was based on the Marvel Comics superhero team the Fantastic Four . Following the film's critical and financial failure, 20th Century Fox started exploring fresh ideas for the franchise. The studio didn't want to just do another Fantastic Four movie because it had already made two other Fantastic Four movies under Tim Story ten years earlier. [19] By June 2017, Seth Grahame-Smith was working on a new movie that will center on Franklin and Valeria Richards, the offspring of Sue Storm (Invisible Woman) and Reed Richards (Mister Fantastic), the original founders of the Fantastic Four. The screenplay featured original Fantastic Four members Ben Grimm/The Thing and Johnny Storm/Human Torch, and it was characterized as kid-centric with a tone more akin to the animated film The Incredibles (2004) than Trank's darker film. The script was inspired by the comic book series Ultimate Fantastic Four (2004–2009). [20] Grahame-Smith's screenplay was based on another script written by Carter Blanchard, which was an adaptation of Mark Millar children's novel Kindergarten Heroes. Fox previously hired Millar as a consultant for its Marvel-based movies. [21] The main adversary of the Fantastic Four in the comics and earlier movies, Victor von Doom / Doctor Doom, was the subject of a stand-alone movie that was developed in July 2017 by Noah Hawley, the creator of the Marvel Television series Legion (2017–2019). [19] In March 2019, 21st Century Fox was formally acquired by The Walt Disney Company, which also acquired the film rights to the Marvel Comics characters Fox owned for its subsidiary Marvel Studios, including the Fantastic Four. [22] The Marvel-based movies that Fox was working on were put "on hold" [23][24]

2 Development

At San Diego Comic-Con in July 2019, producer Kevin Feige acknowledged that development has started.

In July 2019, Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, announced that the studio was working on a new Fantastic Four movie for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), their shared universe[25] Feige stated that he was "extremely excited about those characters, and about bringing Marvel's first family up to the sort of platform and level they deserve" . [26] Feige revealed in December 2020 that Fantastic Four would be directed by Jon Watts, who previously helmed the MCU Spider-Man movies.  [27] [28] By February 2021, Marvel Studios was meeting with authors. [29] Disney CEO Bob Chapek stated in June of that year that Feige and Marvel Studios intended to "mine" the Fantastic Four franchise. [30]  [31] After working on the Spider-Man movies for seven years, Watts decided he needed a break from superhero movies and resigned as director in April 2022 to direct Wolfs(2024). [32][33] After working on the Marvel Studios miniseries Moon Knight (2022), Grant Curtis and Nick Pepin were producing the new Fantastic Four movie by the following month. [34] Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic is played by John Krasinski in the 2022 MCU movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Fans have long suggested Krasinski for the part, and since the new movie's production was confirmed, there had been particular rumors that he had been chosen to play Reed. The character he portrays in Multiverse of Madness is an Illuminatimember from Earth-838, a parallel universe to the main MCU. [35]

By June 2022, Marvel Studios was still looking for a new director and was nothing near narrowing down their list of potential candidates, which apparently included several well-known directors. Similar to Multiverse of Madness filmmaker Sam Raimi, Feige was reportedly seeking a director who could supervise the filming process without physically being there for the entire project. [36] Raimi stated later that month that Feige chose Krasinski for Multiverse of Madness in order to fulfill a common fan casting request and provide a cameo appearance in an other dimension. This raised questions about whether Krasinski will reprise his role in the Fantastic Four movie or if it was a one-off. [37] Krasinski subsequently stated that although he valued the character, there had been no conversations about him playing it again. [38] Feige said that the movie would be the first installment in Phase Six of the MCU and would be released on November 8, 2024, at the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) in July. [39] Production was scheduled to start in 2023. [40] Feige stated that the company intended to tell a new story and that the movie will not be an origin story for the Fantastic Four because many viewers already knew the essential aspects. He compared this to how Spider-Man was introduced in the MCU without having his origin story told. According to Feige, the studio had "set a very high bar for ourselves" because they wanted to live up to the group's lengthy comic book heritage, which dates back to 1961. [41]

By late August 2022, Matt Shakman was in early negotiations to helm the movie. [42] In a search that also looked at Reid Carolin, he and  Michael Matthews were deemed the finalists. [43] Due date Shakman's acquaintance with Feige from directing the Marvel Studios miniseries WandaVision (2021) made Hollywood believe he was the man to beat. [42] As a result of the Fantastic Four timetable, Shakman later left a proposed Star Trek movie. [44] In September, Feige announced during the 2022 D23 Expo that Shakman would be directing the movie. [45] It was disclosed during that month that Ian Springer and Jeff Kaplan had been working with Feige on the script for a while before to Shakman's employment. Feige and Shakman started looking for performers as the four of them worked on coordinating their ideas for the movie. [46] The movie's October release date was rescheduled for February 14, 2025. [47] According to journalist Jeff Sneider, Marvel Studios wanted a big-name actor to portray the role of Doctor Doom, Victor von Doom, who was not supposed to be the film's primary antagonist but would have a brief appearance in a post-credits scene [48][49]

3 Pre-production

By January 2023, talent agents were getting ready for casting. [50] The following month, Shakman gave an explanation of why he decided to work on Fantastic Four, saying that he was thrilled by the film's emphasis on technology, positivity, and family and did not want to miss the chance. According to him, filming would start in early 2024 [51] and they were already in the early stages of casting [52], with the goal of casting Sue Storm / Invisible Woman before the other members of the Fantastic Four. [53] According to Feige, the group will play a significant role in the future of the MCU. [54] At the end of March, Josh Friedman was brought on board to rework the script. The Hollywood Reporter’s Borys Kit said that Friedman's hire suggested a potential change in tone because he had a lot of science fiction work, whereas Kaplan and Springer were more recognized for their comedic works. [55] Friedman was hired to bring the movie closer to Feige and Shakman's vision, according to Sneider, who also said that Shakman wanted to extensively incorporate cosmic aspects from the 1960s comic books, such as Silver Surfer and Galactus, who was supposed to be the main antagonist [56] [57][58]

In April 2023, Sneider revealed that Adam Driver had received an offer from Marvel Studios to play Reed. [59] [60] Filming was scheduled to start in London the following month in January 2024. [61] According to Sneider, Emma Stone was the studio's top pick for the Sue part, but she turned down the offer when they wouldn't give her the $15–20 million she demanded. [57] [60] [62] Additionally, after the company refused to pay Driver's hefty compensation [60] and he had trouble connecting with an early draft of the script, he passed on the movie. [49] But once Friedman sent in a revised copy after the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike , Sneider thought he might give it another look. [49] The movie's June release date was rescheduled until May 2, 2025. [63] Sneider stated that the screen tests for the role of Reed, which were conducted by Marvel Studios with actors including Christopher Abbott and Jamie Dornan, "did not go very well" before the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike began in July. [60] Jake Gyllenhaal, who played Mysterio in the 2019 MCU movie Spider-Man: Far From Home, was offered the part by the studio because they were looking for a well-known actor. However, they refused to give him the compensation he requested because Feige wished to keep the studio's talent expenditures under control. [60] [64] They were also thinking about non-white performers since Reed and Pedro Pascal were intrigued, but he refused to talk to them while the strike was going on. [60] After playing Micro in the  first season of the Marvel Television series The Punisher(2017), Ebon Moss-Bachrach received an opportunity in August to play Ben Grimm / The Thing [5][65] As the Thing, who is described as Jewish in the books but was not portrayed by Jewish actors in the previous Fantastic Four films, Marvel Studios was determined to recruit a Jewish actor such as Moss-Bachrach. [57] [66] David Krumholtz unsuccessfully campaigned for the position online before meeting with Shakman about it. Instead, he started pushing to play the evil Mole Man[67] According to Sneider, Marvel Studios was considering Joseph Quinn for her brother Johnny Storm / Human Torchand Vanessa Kirby for the part of Sue, [49], who was anticipated to be the movie's main character. [60] Although he had discussions about the part, Nicholas Galitzine was not chosen to play Johnny. [68] Matt Smith was approached by Marvel to play Reed, but it did not work out, and they were searching for "a bona fide movie star" instead. Galactus was supposed to be portrayed by a Latino actor. [49]

Shakman stated in October 2023 that they will begin production at Pinewood Studios in London in early 2024 and that the cast would be revealed following the conclusion of the SAG-AFTRA strike. "They were able to work on the production design of the film and early tests of the visual effects to translate the team's abilities from comic art to the screen during the strikes," he said. [69] After working on the Marvel Studios television series Loki (2021–2023), Kasra Farahani was brought on as the production designer, and  Alexandra Byrne returned from a number of previous MCU films as the costume designer. [70] Shakman disclosed that Friedman and Cameron Squires were co-writing the script. Shakman collaborated with both on the Star Trek movie, and Squires wrote for WandaVision. Shakman spoke with comic book writer Matt Fraction about the movie [71] and claimed that his experience with the television show  It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia(2005–present) influenced his approach to the movie because of its improvisation, playfulness, and teamwork. [72] Pascal started negotiations to play Reed after the actors' strike ended in November, and he was juggling his other obligations with the film's timeline. Marvel Studios waited because they believed it was crucial to locate the actor for Reed first, and they were expecting to make bids for the other key roles shortly after. [73] During the making of their movie Gladiator II(2024), Quinn asked Pascal for assistance on the character of Johnny. Pascal said that he was in negotiations to portray Reed, which Quinn found admirable. [74]/Film stated that an announcement will be made soon after Pascal signed on. [75] After Antonio Banderas was initially considered for the part, Javier Bardem was being considered to play Galactus; however, Bardem might have a scheduling clash with the 2025 movie F1[60] According to Sneider, Moss-Bachrach was chosen to play the Thing, while the studio was trying to find a female to play Silver Surfer, who is often the comics' male Norrin Radd. [60]

In order to announce the cast for the titular team, Marvel Studios unveiled Valentine's Day-themed artwork in February 2024. This sparked conjecture on the movie's setting, which was influenced by the 1960s.

Sneider stated in January 2024 that Pascal had to abandon his commitment to the movie  Weapons(2025) because the filming had been postponed from a start date of March or April to a start date of July to September. [76] [77] Sneider asked whether Fantastic Four could still be released in May 2025 if production wasn't scheduled to begin until mid-to-late 2024. [77] SAG-AFTRA announced Pascal's casting in the movie in early February, and it was said that production would start in August. [78] Marvel Studios released a Valentine's Day–themed film on February 14. The casting of Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing was revealed in this themed announcement. Officially titled The Fantastic Four, the movie's release date was postponed to July 25, 2025, when it was rescheduled to coincide with the MCU movie Thunderbolts*[2] A new logo style with a "certain throwback tone and sense of aesthetics" and the December 13, 1963, edition of Life magazine featuring Lyndon B. Johnson on the cover are used in the promotional image for the announcement, suggesting that the movie is set in the 1960s, similar to the earliest Fantastic Four comic books. [79]  [80] When Pascal posted the promotional artwork on social media, he made references to Beatles tunes from the 1960s, which fueled further conjecture. [80] [81] The comic book character H.E.R.B.I.E., a robot friend to the Fantastic Four, is included in the artwork. [82]

Feige claimed that "90 percent of the work was done" simply confirming the core cast and that family dynamics were crucial to the movie. [83] Although he later stated that the movie would take place in a different multiverse reality from the main MCU, he did clarify that it would be set in the 1960s. [84] Shakman described it as "part what you know from the '60s, but part what you've never seen" and referred to it as a retro-future '60s" aesthetic. [7] The movie was inspired by Syd Mead, an industrial designer and concept artist [85]. In addition, when the comics were being created in the 1960s, people had hopes for the future of space flight and the Space Race. Shakman said, "I really wanted to take all of that great stuff from Apollo 11 and just imagine that instead of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, it was the Storms and Ben Grimm and Reed Richards heading off into space" . In order to avoid repeating the Fantastic Four's origin tale and to give the movie its own narrative, he reiterated that the movie would start after they have acquired their superhero powers. [86] From the first Fantastic Four comics to the current era, Shakman studied them all. [87] The team's pale blue, white-necked uniforms are reminiscent of those from Roger Corman’s unreleased Fantastic Four movie (1994) and the comics' debut in Fantastic Four vol. 1 #256 (1983). [88]

The studio had started talking with actors for Silver Surfer, Bardem was the studio's first pick for Galactus, and Doctor Doom would be cast during filming, according to Sneider's February report [57]Eric Pearson was also "quietly hired" to polish the script. For Marvel Studios, Pearson had a reputation for "taking projects over the finish line" [89] Julia Garner was chosen to play Shalla-Bal / Silver Surfer in April. [11] [90] The original Silver Surfer Norrin Radd's love interest in the comics is Shalla-Bal, who transforms into the Silver Surfer herself in the 1999–2000 series. John Paul Leon and Jim Krueger’s Earth-X limited series. [91] According to Justin Kroll of Deadline Hollywood, there is no actor who has an offer or is in negotiations for the role of Galactus. [92] The following month, Ralph InesonJohn Malkovich, Paul Walter Hauser , and Natasha Lyonne joined the cast, with Ineson as Galactus [8] [13] [14] [15][8] [9] Lyonne voiced the original MCU character Byrdie in the third season of the Marvel Studios animated series What If...? (2024), while Ineson previously starred as a Ravager pilot in the MCU movie  Guardians of the Galaxy(2014) [93][94] Malkovich had previously turned down offers to star in Marvel movies because he believed the compensation did not match the amount of work required. After working with Shakman on the movie Cut Bank(2014), he decided to take a part in this one to collaborate with him once more. [95] Hauser spoke with Shakman to talk about joining The Fantastic Four after they had collaborated on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Considering how poorly the previous Fantastic Four movies were received, he was first hesitant to join, but he was convinced by the script and the other members of the cast and crew. [96] According to Sneider, Hauser was cast in the part of Mole Man, who would make an appearance at the start of the movie.[17] By then, Peter Cameron, a writer for WandaVision, had contributed to the writing. [13]

Feige announced at the end of June 2024 that filming would start at the end of July. [97][98] The Thing as a competitor on a dating game show called Let's Make a Match, a children's science program presented by Reed called Fantastic Science with Mister Fantastic, and an astronaut preparation area were all filmed during a few days of pre-filming that took place before to SDCC in late July. [86] It was revealed at the convention that Robert Downey Jr. would play Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom in the MCU crossover movies Avengers: Doomsday (2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (2027), and the movie was retitled The Fantastic Four: First Steps [6][99] Downey, who played Tony Stark / Iron Man in the MCU from 2008 to 2019, will be introduced as Doom in a post-credits sequence at the conclusion of First Steps, according to Sneider. [18] Before the Comic-Con revelation, Shakman claimed to have been aware of Downey's casting for some time. [100] The film's themes of optimism and space exploration are referenced in the new subtitle [86][101], but according to Shakman, it also has other connotations, which sparked conjecture about what they might be. [101]

4 Filming

On July 30, 2024, Principal photography for the working title Blue Moon started at London'sPinewood Studios [102][103] Originally, it was anticipated that filming would start in 2023 [40], early 2024 [61], and August 2024. [78] After collaborating with Shakman on WandaVision, Jess Hall worked as cinematographer for the IMAX release of the movie [69][104][70] Midway through October, location photography took place at Durdle Door inDorset , England. [105] Later that month, Lyonne completed filming her scenes. [106] Filming took place from November 19–22 in the Palace of Congresses in Oviedo, Spain, which was used as the UN headquarters in the movie. Sarah Niles was announced as the cast member in mid-November [1][107] Additionally, the Middleton mine in Derbyshire Dales, England, was used for filming [108], which concluded at the end of November. [109]

4 Music

After scoring several MCU films,  Michael Giacchino was revealed as the film's composer in July 2024. That same month, a drone show at SDCC featured a preview of his music for Galactus and the Fantastic Four. [111] During a "Music of Marvel Studios" panel that Giacchino led at the D23 convention in August, his primary Fantastic Four theme was played in its entirety [112]. and later that month, as part of Marvel Studios' Infinity Saga Concert Experience, at the Hollywood BowlTheWrap’s Mike Roe described the soundtrack as having "a jaunty vibe" which "blends a dreamy sense with future-looking heroic optimism, along with elements that echo the sounds you might expect from a film featuring, say, a space launch" . He compared it to Ant-Man (2015)'s soundtrack from the MCU movie. [113]

5 Marketing

The "4–4 Day" teaser image from Marvel Studios showed the Human Torch forming the Fantastic Four insignia on April 4, 2024. Additionally, there was a link that took users to a 404 error page with H.E.R.B.I.E. and a QR code that led to a page with a list of Fantastic Four comics that were accessible through Marvel Unlimited and had a Future Foundation theme: [3] [114] The initial appearance of the team was in Fantastic Four vol. 1 #1 (1961); Galactus and Silver Surfer made their first debuts in Fantastic Four vol. 1 #48–50 (1966); and Fantastic Four: Life Story #1 (2021), which takes place in the 1960s. [3] The MCU movie Deadpool & Wolverine was screened at SDCC on July 25. Two nights later, a drone display over Petco Park featuring pictures of Galactus and the Fantastic Four emblem teased the movie's announcements at Marvel Studios' Hall H presentation. [115] [116] Shakman and the primary cast were on that panel, which also exhibited a teaser clip, the entire title of the movie, and the future Fantasticar from the movie floating across the stage. [6] According to Shakman, the teaser reel included pre-visualizations and animatics made throughout the film's development together with pre-filming material. [86] An "old-timey 4:3 aspect ratio" was used to display the video. [117] In November, more footage was shown at D23 Brazil . [118]

On February 4, 2025, the film's first teaser trailer was made public. To introduce the teaser, Pascal, Kirby, Quinn, and Moss-Bachrach made an appearance at a fan event at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, also referred to as "Rocket City." [119] A brief "teaser for the first teaser" was released in advance of this, showing kids sprinting toward a TV that shows images of the Fantastic Four. Jesse David Fox of Vulture saw a generic sound effect used for the kids' laughter and questioned whether it was a deliberate sign of something or if the video had been hurried. [120] According to Zack Zwiezen of Kotaku, the sound effect was "shocked and perplexed" that it was used twice in such a brief clip. It had been recorded for use in the 1984 movie Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and had since been used in a number of media projects. [121] Ben Travis at Empire said of the complete teaser that the movie was "on the right track" and that he liked the tone and look as well as the several comic book references. [16] With the exception of Reed's stretching abilities, all of the Fantastic Four's powers are seen in the teaser, according to a number of commentators. [16] [122] [123] Several commentators drew attention to a scene in which the Thing was cooking using H.E.R.B.I.E. and linked it to Moss-Bachrach's portrayal of chef Richie Jerimovich in the television series The Bear (2022–present).  [124] [125] [88] In its first day of release, the teaser had 202 million views, ranking third among Marvel Studios' trailers, behind Deadpool & Wolverine (365M) and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) (355M). A livestream of the teaser's release became Marvel's most-watched livestream ever, and it became the most popular video on YouTube[126] Marvel issued many posters with the tagline "Prepare 4 Launch" in addition to the teaser. [127] One of these was challenged by some who thought it was made using artificial intelligence (AI), citing hands that seemed to have the incorrect number of fingers and a woman's visage that appeared to be used repeatedly. Marvel denies that the poster was made using artificial intelligence. [128] [129] Several other commenters proposed that inadequate photoshopping might be the cause of these problems. [130] A countdown with a First Steps tune was used during IMAX screenings of Marvel's Captain America: Brave New World, which was released later that month. [131]

6 Release

On July 25, 2025, [6], The Fantastic Four: First Steps will be released in theaters across the United States. [132] November 8, 2024, [39], February 14, 2025, [47], and May 2, 2025 were the former dates. [63] It will be the first movie and the beginning of the MCU's Phase Six[133]
